The Beagle
March 1, 2008
The Beagle is a short, compact scent hound recognized for coupling an acute sense of smell with a very sweet & personable disposition.
Used to track and hunt hare, pheasant, quail, rabbits, fox, and even raccoons, Beagles are notorious for their
loud, very unique howl (also known as a baying cry) that has been infamously sought after by hunting horsemen.
Historically speaking, the regal ties of the Beagle can be traced back through literature, as well as, the arts of both the 16th & 17th Centuries.
Many members of the British monarchy- including Queen Elizabeth I, Edward II, & Henry VII- are each said to have been avid fans of their very own packs of Pocket Beagles, Glove Beagles, or Singing Beagles.
But exactly how specialized is this breeds’ schnoz?
Beagles are capable of differentiating between nearly 50 distinct smells… including those too faint to be sensed by scientific equipment!
The, “Beagle Brigade,” started as a branch of the APHIS airport inspection program in 1984, represents a prime example of just how accurate the Beagle’s nose can be.
This highly trained team of Beagles work alongside their handlers in 21 major airports throughout our country to identify travelers whose baggage may contain contaminated items such as meat, animal byproducts, fruits, or vegetables. Each year, this team is said to recover more than 75,000 seizures of prohibited agriculture.
